Utilizing the Library Computers
Teaching at a school in a low socio-economic status area, I feel it is especially important to be aware of the ethical and social issue that not all students will have access to the same levels of technology, if any at all. In my classroom, while some students have computers at home, most do not. However, when assigning their personal essays, I wanted students to be able to type their final copies to give the essays importance and give the students the feeling that their writing mattered. I knew I could not assign the typed final copy as a home assignment because of the ethical and social issues. Therefore, I designated time for my class to have a work session in the school library to type their essays. I showed the students how to use Microsoft Word to type their essays. For some of my students, this was their first time typing on a computer. Overall, my students enjoyed this experience with technology.
