I communicate with the parents of my fourth grade students on a weekly basis. At the beginning of the year, my mentor would send me her parent letters to review and proofread for her. Each week, she would sign the letters from both of us. I began writing more and more each week, gradually taking over the writing of the parent letter. A few weeks before my full takeover teaching and then continuing throughout, I would write the parent letter and send it to my mentor to review for me. The feedback from my mentor about my parent letters has been extremely positive. She described one of my recent letters, “Great letter! It’s personable and full of character.” In my parent letters each week, I include a space for parents to ask any questions or write comments, and they have continued to respond routinely. It has been an easy way to inform parents all about the events of the week and what we will be learning. It is a great way for me to involve parents in their students’ education and allow them to always be in contact and communication with me.
