Evaluating Informal Reading Inventories

Informal Reading Inventories (IRIs) can be used by teachers to assess their students’ reading abilities, including strengths and areas needing improvement. In order to do this effectively, I learned to evaluate various IRIs regarding their areas of assessment, types of passages and word lists, literary quality of passages, clarity of comprehension questions, balance of questions, complete instructions, and clear and convenient format. To most effectively use teaching resources, we must evaluate them first to make sure they will give us the most accurate and authentic information possible about our students.
