I recently taught a lesson on figurative language in which I used a poem written in both English and Spanish to spotlight the skills of my many students who are English language learners. My students’ success and enthusiasm in this activity strengthened my already firm understanding of the importance of creating differentiated and individualized learning experiences to meet the needs of diverse students while still working within the boundaries of the curriculum.
