A couple times throughout the semester, I took part in “Vertical Planning” with grade teams above and below mine. My mentor and I, together with the other fourth grade mentor and intern, took time with both the third grade teachers and fifth grade teachers to plan for more effective instruction across grade levels. The purpose of vertical planning is to see on which indicators students need improvement, and how we can begin to do that in the grade before. It is also useful in planning for any extra time at the end of the year that can be used for preparing students for challenges in the next grade to come.
